How did the UK become the centre of global motorsport?

28 Dec 2017

Despite the UK’s global reputation as the centre of motorsport, little is said of the roots of the legendary “Motorsport Valley’ that facilitates such activity. Industry expert and Motorsport Industry Association (MIA) CEO Chris Aylett outlines the birth and consistent strengthening of this motorsport hub.

RACING HERITAGE

“After World War II, Britain still had many automobile manufacturers. Within each one of these firms there was an R+D department that, in reality, was more of a motorsport department, with engineers testing out new technologies on track at weekends and applying these developments to cars. These firms steadily began to close down as they were all too small, leaving Britain with a fantastic resource of R+D based engineers who loved competition and continued to work in motorsport.”

THE MAGIC FORMULA

“By the 1980s, UK firm Cosworth had become a dominant force with the DFV engine in Formula 1, which was becoming the most important global motorsport series. Slowly but surely, Britain became the centre of the supply chain for F1, and following Bernie Ecclestone’s commercialisation of the sport, Britain was perfectly poised to supply to it.”

PROXIMITY AND EFFICIENCY

“Britain is a small country, and as motorsport relies on fast deliveries, proximity is very important to everyone in Motorsport Valley. We’ve also grown around the world into many other series which demand our skills and efficiency.”

EDUCATION

“We’ve built up a strong base of education within the UK, with 15 universities and over 200 colleges teaching motorsport throughout the country and preserving the future of these skills. This is critical to keeping this supply chain strong in years to come.”

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE

“There is a strong focus on R+D within the automotive sector which we play a key role in. What’s more, the companies within Motorsport Valley are perfectly placed to produce the electric and hybrid technologies needed for the motorsport of the future.”

“Motorsport Valley not only has a strong heritage, but is also constantly innovating and moving towards the future. That’s the reason Motorsport Valley is where it is today, and why it will continue to play a key role in motorsport for many years to come.”
